What is a Registered Dietitian?

A health professional referred to as a Registered Dietitian or RD for short, is a food and nutrition expert who has completed a Bachelor's Degree from a university with an Accredited Dietetics Education Program approved by the American Dietetic Association (ADA), completed an ADA approved dietetic internship, and passed the ADA qualifying exam.  After completing a bachelor's degree in nutrition or dietetics, dietitians-in-training complete a 6-12 month supervised practice program (internship) in a health facility, community agency, or foodservice corporation. The final step in the process to become an RD is for the dietitian-in-training to pass an examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. In order to maintain their RD status, dietitians must meet the ADA's stringent continuing educational requirements.

The designation of Registered Dietitian or RD is a credential developed and conferred by the American Dietetic Association, the foremost authority on nutrition in the United States.
